    This essay is concerned with how an over-emphasis on measurement of academic ability hinders learning by destroying learner motivation. The paper concludes by suggesting that educational reform can only succeed if we deal pragmatically with the deeply rooted historical causes of present attitudes, and make conscious choices about the educational culture we wish to build.

    This paper describes a small-scale experiment in speech perception and short-term memory. Subjects were asked to listen to and repeat short segments of speech. Some of the samples were from a language with an unfamiliar phoneme inventory. Other samples were made of up phonemes found in the subjects' native language. Results indicated that short-term verbal memory functions much better with the samples that have a familiar inventory of phonemes.
